Venice may have been part of Italy for almost a century and a half, but many of its citizens are hankering for a return to the glory days of an empire that lasted for 1,100 years.
More than half a million people have already voted in a referendum to make the city an independent republic once again and organisers are confident of support for a split from mainland Italy.
The internet poll asks if Venice and its surrounding region should “become an independent and sovereign federal republic.” Voting runs until Friday.
Supporters of independence say that the hard-working north is being stifled by a corrupt bureaucracy in Rome, while northern taxpayers are exploited by a lazy and parasitic south.
“The results so far are absolutely significant,” said Gianluca Busato, one of the referendum organisers. “The sentiment of the citizens of the Veneto region was strong and palpable, but popular participation in the vote has exceeded our expectations.” The Most Serene Republic of Venice — La Serenissima — was a maritime superpower for 1,100 years until its last Doge was deposed by Napoleon in 1797. Mr Busato said that he was heartened by the independence struggles of Scotland and Catalonia, which offered the prospect of an “internal enlargement” of the EU. He said: “2014 is turning into a re-run of 1848, with a redrawing of the political geography of the European continent.”
If the “yes” vote passes, the organisers will start drafting a new constitution for the Republic of Veneto and the election of a ten- member council to lead the region towards independence. “We’re looking for a lighter federal state on the model of Switzerland,” Mr Busato said. [...]

Venezia potrebbe essere stato parte d'Italia per quasi un secolo e mezzo , ma molti dei suoi cittadini brama per un ritorno ai giorni di gloria di un impero che durò per 1100 anni .
Più di mezzo milione di persone hanno già votato in un referendum per rendere la città una repubblica indipendente , ancora una volta e gli organizzatori sono fiduciosi di supporto per una scissione da Italia continentale .
Il sondaggio internet chiede se Venezia e la regione circostante devono «diventare una repubblica federale indipendente e sovrana . " Piste di voto fino a Venerdì .
I sostenitori di indipendenza dicono che il nord duro lavoro è stato soffocato da una burocrazia corrotta a Roma , mentre i contribuenti settentrionali sono sfruttati da un sud pigro e parassitario .

Il sig Busato ha detto che è stato rincuorato dalle lotte per l'indipendenza della Scozia e la Catalogna , che ha offerto la prospettiva di un " allargamento interna " dell'UE . Se il voto "sì" passa , gli organizzatori inizieranno la stesura di una nuova Costituzione per la Repubblica di Veneto e l'elezione di un consiglio di dieci membri per condurre la regione verso l'indipendenza .
